Who doesn’t want to know how things work? I’ve always been curious about a whole range of things, and science is all about learning how they work. This approach has given us some wonderful things.

Of course, it has also given us some not-so-wonderful things (I’m thinking of things like the atomic bomb here). We need to be careful about how we do science so it can be beneficial and we can solve the big challenges humans are facing.

I like science because it challenges ideas that we thought/think are ‘right’! It makes us push our understanding and want to know more about everything! There is always something new and interesting to discover and the journey to get there can be really really exciting.

Science is hard work and you don’t always discover anything, but even then, you can let other scientist know that that experiment or method or approach won’t give you the answer. That also is a contribution!

Because to me, science is the essence of what defines us as humans: Being naturally curious about everything that surrounds us, and to develop methods to answer the questions we have about the world and everything. Also, science is international, and allows us to cross cultural and religious boundaries. On the cruise I am joining right now, we have scientists from more than a dozen different countries all working together to reach a common scientific goal – and it’s really great fun!

It is the best tool for answering questions about the universe, right down to the very tiny (particles and atoms) up to the very huge (galaxy superclusters) we have learned it all through scientific enquiry!

as a kid I took stuff to bits all the time to see how it worked (much to my parents annoyance!) and science is just a focused, more general way of finding out how stuff works and where it comes from!

I love science for so many reasons! Science covers so many research areas, including technology. Without science we wouldn’t have computers, cars, airplanes, mobile phones….Science is everywhere and we are making such progress as a race because of it.

Our next challenge is to make sure we can use science to reduce or impact on Earth, through alternative energy etc.
