Accents developed a long time ago, when people couldn’t travel around the world (or even between neighbouring towns) as easily as we can today. Each village and town developed their own way of speaking and used their own forms of slang. In time, as people mixed together more and more, some of the finer details of each language were lost, but accents remained.
