I have a desk in a big open office, shared with 6 other PhD students. You can see a picture on my profile. When academics get more senior they are allowed their own personal office.

The others get to play around in labs, but because my work involves computer calculations I don’t get to 🙁

I work at a desk in an office of 14 other PhD students. I’m here most days but often work at home. I have 2 large computer screens and a linux computer, lots of book, folders and most importantly, a window view! And this is all I need 🙂

I don’t have a lab to escape to, but I do go on quite a few fieldtrips. I always loo forward to those.

I have a desk in a big open-plan office, shared mostly with Engineering Geologists and Geophysicists, I have some electronics kit on the desk, my labview platform for developing hardware and software, a power supply, a signal generator and oscilloscope, as well as some books and the most important thing, my coffee cup! (I also keep a secret stash of kitkats in my top drawer…..)

I work across several labs too, the fluid processes lab, where I build big experimental rigs with valves and tubes and heavy pressure vessels for injecting gas and fluids into rock samples, the Acoustics lab, where I fire acoustic signals through rocks and other things to try to characterise them, and the instrument development lab, where I make prototype instruments and accidentally blow electronic components up 🙂

I’ve actually just moved into a new office, which is a big open plan office which I share with 47 other students. I’ve only been here for a day, so we’ll have to see how it works out! I’m right next to a window with a view across the campus, which is nice and I get lots of light.
On my desk, I’ve got my laptop, a large screen and a pot with some pens. I’ve got a bookshelf with lots of books and folders and I’ve also stuck some postcards and photos on that to make it look more homely!

I work in a lab also, check out the photo on my profile! Its big and quite loud because there is an air compressor that runs 24/7 and it makes a lot of noise. I get to use an oven, a microwave, an instrument called a JR6 and a microscope in my lab.

I have a small office on the fourth floor of the Drummond Building. I am currently overlooking a construction site for a new student accommodation, and behind that the green hills of the town moor. I have a computer and many books on shelves, and two lovely plants. I also have a lab with a number of different analytical instruments.

But right now, I am sitting at a computer in middle of the Pacific Ocean, in the corner of the shipboard chemistry lab. This lab is way better equipped than mine at home! And the ship is constantly moving, which you really need to get used to! The ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is about 120 m long, and has a big derrick on top.
