• Question: What is the most dangrous/scary thing you have done within your job?

      My job isn’t very dangerous! I do a lot of simulations on the computer and don’t get to do fieldwork, so I don’t get put in harm’s way much. Perhaps the others will have some interesting stories from their fieldwork or the lab…

      I don’t do too many dangerous things in my job. Field work is probably the most dangerous thing I do, but we plan it carefully so that it’s not too bad. The most dangerous situation I’ve been in is working South Africa in an area where there were hippopotamus and elephants, so we had to have a trained guide with us at all times. Hippos kill more humans in South Africa than lions do!

      I think the first time you inject pressurised gas into an experimental setup is always a bit nervous, one bad connection can lead to leaking gases, or things bursting violently, it’s why we have training in making gas tube circuits and always make sure there is someone else around when you’re playing with gases

      a few weeks ago an old seal failed and a lab ended up being filled with hydrogen, we had to evacuate to the other side of the site and it took all weekend for the gas to disperse!
