Really good question! Global warming can be caused by many things. One of those things is carbon dioxide, which humans produce when they burn things. Volcanoes also produce carbon dioxide, but not as much as humans.

Volcanoes throw all sorts of other things out, including another gas called sulphur dioxide. This gas can turn into a liquid in the atmosphere. It becomes tiny droplets of sulphuric acid! The droplets are really, really small (100 times smaller than the width of a hair!) so you can’t see them. These droplets reflect some of the Sun’s light, which means they act like a sunshade. This cools the Earth down.

The last big eruption was in 1991. Mt Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted and the Earth cooled by about half a degree for a few years. After that all the droplets fell out so it soon warmed up again. Some of the really big eruptions, like Tambora in 1815, were so big it got way too cold and lots of people starved because farmers couldn’t grow their crops. That’s why they call 1815 ‘the year without a summer’.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions!
