The first living organisms on Earth appeared about a million years after Earth first formed. There is evidence for them in the rocks I study, which is exciting :)!
Scientist think that they were like mats of bacteria and single-celled organisms all living together. They lived on sulphur emitted from volcanoes and made really bad smells! The very oldest ones are found in rocks in Australia. These fossils were found by scientist from the University of Oxford who collaborated with an Australian university too.
It took about another million years before multi-cell organisms formed and photosynthesis began. This made a big change to the Earth because Oxygen was put into the atmosphere!
