Not really. Most of my work is done on the computer so I don’t really get put in harm’s way. I am quite accident prone as it is, though. I have spilled hot tea over myself several times! It mainly happens when I am distracted or concentrating on my work so when I try to drink I miss my mouth…
I work with high voltage electricity (upwards of 5000 volts) as well as quite a lot of pressurised gases, I have to take care and make sure I take necessary precautions when working with such dangerous things!
Most of the time I don’t.
I work with a machine that has a large current put through it, which can be dangerous if it gets too hot (it can start a fire). It also generates a field that would be very dangerous for someone who had a pacemaker to help their heart beat.
I also work with liquid nitrogen, which can burn you, so you have to wear goggles, gloves and long sleeves when I using it!
Yes – it’s unavoidable being a geochemist. We often have to dissolve rocks, and certain minerals only dissolve with concentrated hydrofluoric acid (HF). Does not sound very dangerous, but it can actually diffuse through your skin, and already a small amount can kill you! So, safety first, wear gloves, safety glasses, and a lab coat, and be concentrated!
