      mostly yes….

there are days when nothing goes right, and all you have to do is paperwork and you wish you’d stayed in bed, but those are thankfully rare, I’m very lucky that I work for a fantastic employer and alongside some of the most brilliant scientists in the world, so 99% of the time, I enjoy my job!

Definite yes! I have always been interested in rocks and fossils and minerals, and I still am! Being a scientist is sometimes a two-sided sword, because really nobody tells you what to do, and you can often do whatever you are interested in. This is mostly very nice, but can also be difficult because you can get lost in certain details of your work, nobody pushes you if you have a lazy phase, and you have to bring in your own money to do your research. But mostly I really enjoy the fact that I could turn my hobby into my job 🙂

Yes! Every day is differnt and it’s difficult to get bored in my job. If I’m frustrated with a task/experiment I’m doing, I can do something esle instead: read about new and exciting findings, write up some recent results, mark students work, etc… Few other jobs would allow you to do that! Making a discovery is also very exciting!

Some days are difficult, frustrating and long, but 99% of the time I really enjoy being a scientist!

Being a scientist is pretty cool. Especially in geo-research. We make progress towards new discoveries every day. We get to travel all over the world for meetings and field work, meeting amazing people and seeing the wonders of the world. My favourite trip was to Turkey to install seismometers on the North Anatolian fault (check out my photos).

We also get opportunities to get involved with the community, which is really good fun.

As with every job there are bad days, but they never last for long.

      It’s the best!

As I think most of the others have said, some days aren’t so great. But who has a good day every day? Sometimes you have to do a bit of hard work. At the moment I am writing a computer program but it’s not working properly. It’s really annoy and can take AGES, but once I get this program done I can do some really cool science using it! So on the whole, even with the bad days, I love doing what I do.
