Oooh interesting question. I haven’t had to use this information for a while. So there are 4 different types of volcano:
1. Composite – found on the fore arc of subduction zones. These volcanoes have steep sides and have explosive eruptions with pyroclastic flows.
2. Shield – found at constructive margins (rifts) and hot spots (Hawaii). These volcanoes have gently steeping sides and have fast flowing lava from non-explosive eruptions.
3. Dome – formed by relatively small, blobby masses of lava that too viscous to flow any great distance.
4. Cinder cones – simple volcanoeds formed from particles and blobs of congealed lava erupted from a single vent. The gas-charged lava is blown violently into the air, breaking into small fragments that become solid and fall as cinders around the vent to form a circular cone.
