I’m a great fan of Richard Feynman. He’s great on science:

“We are at the very beginning of time for the human race. It is not unreasonable that we grapple with problems. But there are tens of thousands of years in the future. Our responsibility is to do what we can, learn what we can, improve the solutions, and pass them on.”

And on how other things are more important than science:

“Tell your son to stop trying to fill your head with science — for to fill your heart with love is enough.”

Feynman knew the value of science and he did it with the most wonderful curiosity. When you hear him speak (you can find some videos on YouTube) you can hear the joy of discovering in his voice. That’s how science should be done.

He was also a really interesting person, someone who understood than there was more to life than science, and that we should all do our best to get along 🙂

Great answer from Angus, Feynman was a truly inspirational scientist!

for me though, it’s probably Stephen Hawking, he revolutionised the way we think about the origins of the universe, made science accessible to all through his writing and he did it all while suffering from a degenerative disease which has confined him to a wheelchair, unable to move anything except a few tiny muscles
