I work on the possible impacts of ways to cool the climate. There might be side-effects if we cool the climate down by putting particles into the atmosphere. I think my work is quite important because some people think would could just go ahead and do it and everything would be alright. In fact, there are some quite series issues with cool the climate this way and it’s important we learn about this. So I guess my work benefits people by helping them to decide what we should do about climate change.

I work in areas of science connected with carbon capture and storage (helping to find ways to slow or stop the damage we are doing to the climate) Radioactive waste disposal (making sure nasty toxic waste is disposed of safely) and quite a lot on geohazards, detecting stuff like landslides, abandoned mine workings and old landfills, as well as consulting with the military about how to detect buried explosives

Hopefully, if all goes well!!!Through my work we will understand the Earth’s magnetic field better. If we can understand how it used to work in the past, then we might be able to say more about how it might behave in the future. It might contribute towards understanding why reversals of the magnetic field happens and when it might happen next (though that is a bit of a long a shot).
I might also help us understand more about how the magnetic field protects us from solar storms and corona mass ejections. So, it might mean we can prepare our telecommunications better against them in the future.
